The European Badger, Meles meles or Eurasian badger, is a mammal indigenous to most of Europe, excluding Northern Scandinavia, Iceland, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily and Cyprus) and to many parts of Asia, from about 15° to 65° North, and from about 10° West to 135° East.  It is a member of the Mustelidae family, and so is related to the Stoats, Otters, Weasels, Minks and other badgers.  Accepted subspecies include Meles meles meles of Western Europe, Meles meles marianensis of Spain and Portugal, Meles meles leptorynchus of Russia, Meles meles leucurus of China and Tibet and Meles meles anakuma of Japan.

Within the sub-species of European Badger, there is a very rare and unique sub-species called:

M. meles - Scubadgerus Scubadger

This small amphibious badger can be found in the locale of the underwater historic environment and is a protector of underwater archaeology.  In total there has been 4 Scubadgerus sub-species discovered,  with more sub-species being catalogued with further underwater cultural heritage projects.
