Diving is a safe past time where incidents involving decompression illness and pulmonary barotrauma are low when the correct safety measures are in place and divers have received correct training in the equipment and procedures they are using. 

However, no one is immune from DCI and there is no way of predicting when a diving incident may occur.  The proper medical equipment and training in its use will greatly reduce the damage caused by inert gas bubbles manifesting as either acute neurological decompression illness of pulmonary over-inflation syndrome.
