Nikki Bird
Chief Executive

Graduating from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow with a BA(Hons) in Business Administration, Nikki has gained post-graduate qualifications in marketing and enjoyed a successful career working with a number of multinational companies and SMEs. Having worked with the ADA since its inception, her experience of business planning, marketing and contract negotiation have facilitated the ADA in becoming one of the best known archaeological associations in Europe. Nikki is responsible for the day-to-day running of the ADA, and until she can find underwater housing for her telephone and laptop, her role will remain primarily top-side. Nikki is a qualified Open Water Diver and enjoys UK diving just as much as diving in warmer climes overseas.

 Jody Neal
Archaeological Director

Jody is a qualified scholar and practitioner in the fields of archaeology, culture and heritage management, with extensive international experience within excavation, heritage site management, academic research, university lecturing and museum exhibition/collections management. In addition to her professional contributions to museum and cultural centres in Malaysia, Italy, Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong and the Netherlands, Jody has managed a cultural heritage NGO in Asia where she successfully pioneered a number of projects for such organisations as the National Heritage Board (Singapore), IMG Artists, the National Arts Council (Malaysia), Fort Canning Archaeological park and the Asian Geographic society.

As a scholar, Jody’s research is predominantly focused on the Egyptian Late & Graeco-Roman Periods, and specifically on religious practice, international relations and writing in these epochs, which form her current PhD research. She is also studying the place of animals in Late and Greco-Roman Periods through excavations and discoveries of the Bubasteion (Saqqara) with the French Archaeological mission. For her first Master of Arts degree (Egyptology), Jody focused upon the hieroglyphic language of Egypt, predominantly via Middle Kingdom texts and upon the art, architecture and religion of the society. Her second Masters degree in World Heritage management (MSc) in collaboration with UNESCO gained her an awarded fellowship to research and create a management thesis plan for the underwater archaeology site of the Eastern Harbour in Alexandria, Egypt in accordance to the UNESCO 2001 convention on the protection of underwater cultural heritage.

In addition to her archaeological excavation experience in the north of Egypt, Jody has worked as an archaeologist on sites in Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong. As a diver, Jody has followed the current recreational system for open water diving, training in Rescue, Wreck, Night and Deep diving.  Her experience includes dives within the regions of Australia, Italy, Hong Kong, Malyasia, Indonesia, Cambodia and the UK.  A long hose convert from the recreational system; Jody still believes that her voice sounds exactly the same when breathing Hyperoxic Trimix (32/25) and is starting to enjoy the challenges of UK Diving.

  Ted Crosbie
Training Director
Ted starting SCUBA Diving at a young age. specialising in Diving Medicine and the Principles and practices of Divers Emergency Life Support and physiological aspects of decompression during a career in the Army Medical Services, RAMC. During this time, Ted qualified as a Joint Services Sub-Aqua Diving Supervisor in 2001 and also developed courses for the Defence Diving School and the Institute of Naval Medicine.  He is the co-founder of the ADA, and his main role is that of education and development of the ADA Courses in accordance with the UNESCO Regulations and the Competencies of the SDSC and HSE as well as working with the BAJR Federation's Underwater Archaeology Group.  Ted is also an associate tutor in Maritime Archaeology at Sussex University.  Ted continues to train in all aspects of technical and rebreather diving.  When not diving, teaching, answering the phone or conducting terrestrial CPD with Sussex University, he is preparing for his DPhil in Archaeology.

Steven Lord
Equipment Director
Steve is a specialist in underwater explosives and demolitions having been a professional military diver since 1998. He has also been fundamental in course design for both the Defence Diving School and the commercial diving company, Divex. Steven’s main role is that of Equipment Director, specialising in all aspects of equipment maintenance and development and will act predominantly as a consultant and adviser for the Archaeological Diving Association. Steve is also an experienced recreational advanced diver, and is beginning to appreciate the benefits of twin-sets and stages.
